Santa Ponsa – the perfect family beach resort

The calm, crystal-clear shallow waters in Santa Ponsa Bay are perfect for children who love swimming in the sea, and there are a wide range of water sports to be enjoyed. You can hire pedalos, paddle boards and jet skis, or even try your hand at scuba diving.

As you can imagine for a such a popular beach resort, Santa Ponsa’s infrastructure is impressive. The town is widely regarded as a value for money destination served by a profusion of bars, cafes and restaurants as well as a variety of upmarket accommodation.

Importantly, you will not find any high rise accommodation dotting the coastline in Santa Ponsa. This makes the place even more appealing to visit and spend some quality time here.

A little history

Whilst enjoying a potter around Santa Ponsa, it is hard to imagine the town having any notable history – everything here looks so contemporary and modern. However, don’t be fooled: Santa Ponsa is literally steeped in Mallorcan history.

First of all, the town’s name itself comes from an ancient Roman villa called Sancta Pontia.

The inlet of Sa Caleta (where today you’ll find the impressive Santa Ponsa Marina), is the place where in 1229 AD King Jaume I of Aragon landed his 150-ship fleet that began the reconquest of Mallorca.

At this time, Majorca had been in the possession of the Moors of North Africa for more than 300 years. The reconquest returned the island to Christian rule.

A large stone cross commemorating the event can be spotted at the marina, and the reconquest is celebrated every September with a lively two-week fiesta featuring a staged beach battle between the Moors and Christians.

You’re never short of things to do

Santa Ponsa in season is a busy place, bustling along quite merrily at its own pace. Bars and cafes abound, and there is a variety of boutiques, gift shops and supermarkets to cater for your every need. There’s a popular street market too, every Saturday.
On the outskirts of town you’ll find Polígono Son Bugadelles, a large industrial estate featuring a wide range of retail businesses such as yacht supplies, beds and furniture, as well as the renowned interior designers, Knox Design.
Naturally, due to Santa Ponsa’s coastal location, there are a variety of boat trips to enjoy – a lovely way to escape the summer heat and enjoy a breath of breeze on the ocean waves.

Nearby is the 18-hole Poniente Golf Club, one of the longest established courses in Mallorca.

Other sports too, are a popular pastime in Santa Ponsa. In addition to all the usual aqua sports such as paddle boarding and jet skiing, tennis is also popular. The resort even boasts its own Tennis Club.
