A little history of this thriving ex-patriot community

Previously known as Els Terrers de S’Hostalet, the town eventually inherited its current name due to the image of the Virgin of Portals in the Oratorio de Portals, the town’s lovely old parochial church.

In the early part of the twentieth century, Palma middle class families built their second homes here. In the last few decades however, Portals Nous has become a popular choice for UK expats to own a holiday home.

Golden beaches and luxury yachts

Located on the west side of Palma Bay in Mallorca’s southwest, Portals Nous has a rather chic feel to it, exemplified by the amount of classy villas dotted around the rocky hillsides leading up from the sea. The main beach is a long strip of golden sand backed by high cliffs which give a sheltered feel making a dip in the crystal-clear waters highly desirable.

The main beach leads on to Puerto Portals, probably the most exclusive yachting marina on the island. This is glamour at its most unapologetic. If celebrity spotting is your thing, you will not be disappointed! Famous faces such as Brad Pitt, Bill Gates, Paris Hilton and Jensen Button have been spotted here in the summer months.
The most exclusive yachting marina in Mallorca?

With space for more than 600 vessels to berth, luxury yachts are commonplace in Puerto Portals. In fact, some of the boats anchored here look more like ocean-going liners than mere yachts.

The marina’s shopping options are pretty impressive too. Stroll around the picturesque port and you’ll find yachting agencies, real estate agents, high-end designer boutiques, exclusive jewelry concessions and also a branch of the upmarket Spanish department store, Cortes Ingles.

And when it comes to exclusive bars and restaurants, you really are spoilt for choice. In Puerto Portals you can enjoy anything from a gourmet burger to a Michelin-starred meal.

Portals’ little secret

Away from the swanky glamour and hustle and bustle of the yachting marina is one of the area’s best kept secrets – Playa Cala Portals. It’s a lovely sheltered cove with a small sandy beach surrounded by a rocky coastline. The perfect place for a relaxing swim in the crystal clear waters.

Great golf

Right on Portal Nous’s doorstep lies Real Golf de Bendinat set in a picturesque wooded valley with splendid views over the Mediterranean. An enjoyable 18-hole course including some particularly challenging ‘dog legs’ awaits keen golfers!

Around Portals Nous

The laid back village of Portals Nous is just a short distance away from the upmarket marina of Puerto Portals. Here, amongst the luxury yachts there is a wealthy vibe where you’ll find high-end designer fashion, top-notch restaurants and several cafes and bars.

Just to the west of Portals Nous is Marineland, a popular attraction especially with the children. This nautical theme park really knows how to put on a show – performing dolphins, a shark aquarium, penguins and pelicans are just some of the attractions on offer. There is even an underwater tunnel!

Just a few miles away you’ll come across Pirates Adventure. Here you can enjoy a great family night out featuring dining and spectacular show.

Similarly, Western Park is a fantastic water park nearby featuring some pretty daunting water slides that the kids all love.

And that’s not all. On the town’s doorstep lie the upmarket beach resort of Illetas as well as the attractive residential areas of Bendinat and Cas Catala. The capital Palma is just 10 minutes drive away.

How to get to Portals Nous

As previously mentioned, Portals Nous is situated on the main Palma to Andratx road and is very near the Via Centura, Mallorca’s ring road motorway. You can catch a number of regular buses to the capital Palma, or in the opposite direction to the resorts of Puerto Andratx and Peguera. The airport is roughly 25 minutes away by taxi or car.
